Choosing a baby name can be so difficult, so what do you do when your favourite name has been claimed by a friend
A woman has described a ‘world war’ breaking out in her friend group because one of the girls gave birth and stole her friend’s favourite baby name.
Speaking to Newstalk, she explained: “We’re now in our early 30s and last year, the first of the group became pregnant, so there was great excitement.”
The friend decided to call her little girl, Molly, and it did not land well in the group chat.
“The problem is one of the other girls in the group, for years, has spoken about how if she ever had a baby girl, she would call her Molly – it is now World War Three in the friend group,” she said.
While some of the group argued that you can’t ‘claim a name,’ particularly when you’re single and not expecting, others disagreed that it was unfair when the friend had always made it known that she wanted to use that name.
“The group has now divided in two and the girl whose name was robbed is genuinely hurt,” she went on to say.
“At a time when one of our friends just had her first baby, I think the focus should be elsewhere.”
Writer and Broadcaster Barbara Scully joined the conversation on Newstalk and said she was completely in agreement that the focus should be on the new baby and not on a name.
“This is the most stupid argument and thing to fall out over,” she said.
“If you’re going to fall out with them, fall out with them over something big and important.”
Barbara went on to say that it simply is not fair to call claim to a name and insist that no one in your group use it.
“That’s crazy, especially since the one who has claimed the name isn’t even pregnant,” she said.
“Even if the other woman does get pregnant, if she does have a girl child, and she does call her Molly – the chances of the two Molly children being friends is very, very low.
“The chances of the imaginary Molly going to school in a class where there’s loads of Mollies are actually much higher.”
What are your thoughts? Which friend is in the right and would you be angry if someone stole your favourite baby name?
