The number one baby girl name of the year has been decided.

It doesn't look like there is going to be any change at the top when it comes to this year's top female baby name. As we approach the final week in December, Olivia is still holding very strong and is currently the top choice for the year. Most baby names websites are coining Olivia as the overall winner but over on Baby Center, they have it as number two with Sophia taking the number one spot. Either way, it's a very tight call and both names are relatively similar too. The Latin translation of Olivia is 'olive branch' and as we all know, to extend an olive branch is an offer of peace, not a bad idea when it comes to naming your little one. This is a name that will never date, a classic choice that your little girl will love years down the line. Sophia means 'wisdom' and again, this is a brilliant choice for your baba, who doesn't want to be the one doling out wise advice to all her pals. The other names in the top five right now include Emma, Ava and Isabella but there are a few days to go so it could change considerably before the 31 December.
