A 40-year-old Greek woman has announced that she is pregnant with twins after undergoing an experimental treatment to ‘reverse’ the menopause.

The lawyer, known only as Natalia, told The Times that she had planned to adopt after six failed rounds of hormone therapy for congenital ovarian failure.

However, the 40-year-old then underwent a new technique, involving an injection of blood plasma into the ovaries and womb which claims to rejuvenate the reproductive organs.

The pioneering treatment uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to trigger the growth of tissue and blood vessels and is said to accelerate the repair of damaged bones and muscles through stimulated tissue regeneration. The PRP is injected into the ovaries of menopausal women and restarts their periods.

Natalia says that she conceived nine days after receiving the injection and reports that she is now ten weeks pregnant with twins. The overjoyed mum-to-be told the newspaper that the treatment was a miracle.

“I had nothing to lose. Doctors had already told me I was a lost cause, but then a miracle followed.”

Dr Konstantinos Pantos, the founder of the Genesis Clinic in Athens where Natalia underwent treatment, says she is the first woman to become pregnant naturally after receiving the injection. Dr Pantos reported that out of 27 menopausal women treated in the experimental study, 12 managed to ovulate,

“That in itself, is a huge medical milestone.”

180 women have already undergone the treatment at the Greek clinic and the medical team believe the technique could now reverse the menopause, allowing older women to become mums.
