A woman has enraged listeners of a phone-in talk show with her comments about IVF.

98FM’s Dublin Talks was interviewing couples who are going through expensive fertility treatment with no financial help from the Government.

The show, presented by Adrian Kennedy,  got especially heated when a woman named Terri phoned in with comments that left everyone speechless.

The show centered around a couple who were struggling financially for four years to fund IVF treatment.

Currently, the treatments are only available privately from clinics at a cost of around €4,000 to €4,500 per course, pushing them out of the reach of many couples.

The caller said his wife was at breaking point after numerous unsuccessful treatments. He wanted to discuss how the Government could help ease some of the financial burden.

Caller Terri stunned when she called in to say that the entire process was a “dirty practice” that was “not natural” and that you should not “bring a child into the world in a bottle” and there was “enough children in the world”

She said she believed couples should adopt instead and said you couldn’t expect her “to pay for that”

Cue a barrage of angry callers who slammed her as “a disgrace” and branded her comments as “disturbing, cruel and disgusting”

Many listeners pointed out that adoption is a lengthy and expensive process and that as taxpayers themselves they would be entitled to assistance from our health service.

The Department of Health is carrying out a review of how fertility treatments are funded in other countries – such as by the NHS in Britain.

It is hoped a similar scheme aimed at easing some costs of IVF treatment could be in place here in Ireland soon for couples who need it.

We are completely horrified by the insensitive and ignorant comments.
