If you have ever attended an antenatal class while pregnant, it may have been led by one of our national treasures – a ‘Maureen’.
Poor ole Maureen has been a midwife her entire life until retirement and worked during the tough times in Ireland when a capable neighbour and a pot of hot water was all the assistance you needed to deliver a baby.
She has no feckin’ interest in your modern-woman questions on labour or childbirth and will thank you to stay strong and bear down on a stick of rock from Courtown in lieu of actual pain relief.
