Man whose 61-year-old mother gave birth to child says surrogate experience was “magical”

Ellen Fitzpatrick

Having his mother carry the child was “magical”.

A 61 year old woman became the oldest person in the US to give birth, and it was to her own grandchild.

When Matt Dürt and his husband Elliot decided they wanted children, it only took one simple joke before their life changed forever.

Matt was discussing surrogacy with his doctor, he decided to tell a light hearted joke after learning that the friend originally meant to do it wasn’t a good fit.

So when the couple were told that the carrier wasn’t going to work out, Matt offered his mother’s services up, but the doctor had different ideas.

She immediately asked if his mother, Cecile Eledge, could actually do it, and turns out that she could after all.

And when it came to the surrogate, Matt’s mother had constantly offered but it wasn’t until this moment that they took her seriously.

Chatting with Insider, Matt explained that his daughter was created by combining Matt’s sperm and Elliot’s sister’s egg, noting that it was not your average way to have a child.

So when Elliot’s sister heard her brother was looking for an egg donor, she volunteered her services.

“When you say those three letters [IVF], you think expensive,” Elliot said, knowing that this way they knew the eggs would be free.

The only thing that made the whole thing so much more special for the couple was when they realised that the egg that brought their daughter Uma into the world had passed through both of their mothers.

“Both of the matriarchs of this family have carried this egg,” Elliot said.

Of course, the egg was within Matt’s mum, but as it also came from Elliot’s sister, it technically passed through his mother too, who passed away before Uma was born.

Matt was initially “embarrassed” to say his daughter was biologically related to both parents, thinking some people would judge them, but now sees it as “something really magical.”

“I had a real deep fear that I wouldn’t have this internal maternal magic that is so important for loving and nurturing a young sentient being. Then she was born and I held her for the first time, and I heard her cry for the first time and it was such a cosmic experience.”
