Mum-to-be Serena Williams says she’s ‘not the marrying type’

It’s a busy time for Serena Williams who is expecting her first child and is due to marry Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian.

However, the tennis champion has revealed that it’s not the life she saw herself having. Speaking at the Ted 2017 conference last week, Serena revealed that marriage was never something she saw on the cards. “I never felt pressure to get married, and I can’t say I’m the marrying type,” she told Gayle King. “I love my life. I love my freedom. I hear that kind of changes. I love my career, and I didn’t want anything to interfere with that.”

Serena went on to admit that her reaction her fiance’s proposal was far from what many would expect. “When Alexis proposed, I was almost angry. “No, not almost – I was angry, because it was right in the middle of my training season and I thought, ‘I have to win the Australian Open.’ “I really wanted to pass Steffi Graf’s record.”

However, despite the proposal, Serena went on to win her 23^rd Grand Slam title, surpassing Graf’s record – all the while pregnant with the couple's first child. When news broke of Serena’s pregnancy, social media erupted with praise for the athlete who found out she was pregnant just two weeks before winning that historic title. “I was so nervous,” she added. “ I wasn’t sure what to do. Can I play? I know it’s very dangerous in the first 12 weeks or so, so I had a lot of questions.” With her exciting news under wraps, Serena says she was feeling massive pressure to perform. “I really felt like I didn’t have time to deal with any extra emotions – any extra anything. “Pregnant or not, no one knew. Every tournament where I show up, I’m expected to win. If I don’t win, it’s actually bigger news.”
