Your baby at 32 weeks pregnant: Week-by-week guide to development

Welcome to week 32 of your pregnancy! This week, your baby is as big as a kale leaf. Here’s what else you can expect this week.

Your baby

Your baby, about 42 centimetres long and weighing around 1.7 kilograms, is getting stronger and more earthside-worthy by the day. Their lungs are almost mature, and they’re practising those tiny breaths. The brain is rapidly developing, with billions of neurons forming connections. Your baby’s little fingernails might even reach the tips of their fingers. It’s incredible how far they’ve come. In Ireland, the chance of having twins is about 1 in 65 pregnancies, and triplets are even rarer, so if you’re carrying multiples, you’re quite unique. Be sure to follow your healthcare team’s guidance at this time.

You

It’s week 32, and you’re officially eight months pregnant! With your baby growing rapidly, your back may feel the strain, so be sure to use good posture and wear comfortable shoes. Swelling, especially in your feet and ankles, is par for the course – elevate your legs when you can. Your uterus is pushing against your diaphragm, so shortness of breath is normal. If heartburn is a bother, try smaller, more frequent meals. Sleep? It’s elusive, but a pregnancy pillow can work wonders.

Anything else?

As you prepare for the grand arrival, consider childbirth classes to familiarise yourself with the birthing process. Review your birth plan with your healthcare team, discussing any concerns or preferences you may have. And don’t forget to explore your maternity leave options and if you need to start any handover process, start planning it.
