Welcome to week 39 of your pregnancy! This week, your baby is as big as a watermelon. Here’s what else you can expect during week 39.

You

At week 39, you’re on the cusp of delivering. You may be feeling the anticipation building – like the calm before the storm. However, those aches and pains might be mounting, and your discomfort levels may be peaking. Over 50% of women in the Ireland and the UK have an epidural during labour, which can offer pain relief, so keep that in mind if you’re concerned about the impending birth. Many mums-to-be experience a renewed nesting phase at this point, so take advantage of it by getting your home in order and ensuring you have everything you need for your new arrival. Puffy feet are pretty much par for the course during this part of pregnancy but there are some time-honoured ways to make your tootsies feel terrific (or close to it).

Your baby

Your baby has plumped up nicely, weighing around 3.3 kilograms and measuring approximately 51 centimetres. All their systems are ready to go, and they’re just adding the finishing touches before they face the world. The vernix, the waxy coating that’s been protecting their skin, is beginning to disappear, but they might still have some of it at birth. Most of their organs, including the liver, lungs, and immune system, are fully developed. Your baby is now more than ready to make their debut.

Anything else?

Stay in close touch with your healthcare provider at this stage. Any significant changes in your baby’s movements or any unusual symptoms should be reported immediately. Double-check that you have everything packed and ready for your hospital stay. When you’re so close to meeting your baby, it’s helpful to stay organised and ensure you’re as stress-free as possible.
