Serena Williams has defended her decision to have an epidural

"I’m nervous about childbirth."

It’s the pregnancy we’ve all been obsessed with.

Ever since it was accidentally revealed earlier this year, we’ve been hooked on the details of Serena William’s pregnancy.

In a new interview with Vogue, the athlete admitted that despite her tough image, she’s not exactly looking forward to giving birth.

“I’m nervous about childbirth,” she said.

“I’m not a spring chicken. The one thing I really want is an epidural, which I know a lot of people are against, but I’ve had surgeries galore, and I don’t need to experience any more pain if I can avoid it.”

She also told the magazine that she was worried about being ‘good enough’ as a mum.

“The biggest thing is that I don’t really think I’m a baby person. Not yet. That’s something I have to work on.”

The magazine detailed how prior to this year’s surprise pregnancy, Serena “terrified of getting pregnant”.

The tennis ace suffered with bilateral pulmonary embolisms after foot surgery in 2011 and carrying a baby put her at further risk of blood clots.

She now has to inject herself daily to prevent clots, but said that once she realised she was expecting, her fears dissipated.

“Once I found out, something happened that surprised me.

“I became really calm. I thought, You have to win, but you’re allowed to lose, because you have something to look forward to.”

We reckon motherhood will suit her down to the ground, and we mightn’t have to wait long to find out.

If our calculations are right, Serena is now nearing her 40-week mark so we’re eagerly awaiting any news of the birth!
