A woman who carried her best friend’s baby had to give birth without the child’s mother by her side.

Jes Brockie offered to be a surrogate for her longtime friend Bec Arena but Bec passed away in September, long before she could meet her baby.

Bec suffered from cystic fibrosis, which caused her to have issues with fertility, reports News AU.

Her friend since primary school, Jes stepped in to give Bec and her husband Gareth Arena, who plays football for the New Zealand All Whites, the baby they wanted but couldn’t have by themselves.

“It’s no secret that CF has made our road to parenthood a difficult and tumultuous one, so to be expecting baby Arena in a little under 6 months still feels quite surreal!,” wrote Bec in an Instagram post announcing the pregnancy last year.

“We are so fortunate to have Jes and her family helping us along this road.”

Sadly, Bec’s health took a turn in September of 2017 and she died.

Jes gave birth to Bec and Gareth’s baby this week, a healthy baby boy called Rixon James.

In his latest Facebook post, Gareth explained how much Bec had wanted to become a mum.

“This is the hardest part of being a father for me, i can deal with the sleepless nights and shitty nappies. The things I would do just to be able to see him in Bec’s arms.”

He has vowed to keep his wife’s Instagram page going to be “able to share some amazing photos of little Rixon James Arena and his journey through life.”
