High fashion has a sketchy history when it comes to diversity.

Designers have in the past tended to favour models with a very particular look, but increasingly we’re seeing more people of colour and different body types in campaigns and shows.

One designer took this initiative to a new level at New York Fashion Week last week when a visibly pregnant model popped up on the catwalk.

Model Maia Ruth Lee walked for Eckhaus Latta with her baby bump peeking out of her dress.

Sharing the above shot on Instagram, Nicole Phelps, director of Vogue Runway, wrote, “I’ve been going to fashion shows for 21 years and I’ve seen a pregnant model on the runway exactly one other time. Something to think about.”

Maia is due to give birth next month but for casting director Rachel Chandler, the decision to have the model in the show was simple.

“She came in and tried on a look, and it fit,” she told Vogue.

A small fashion house from New York, Eckhaus Latta has made a name for itself in promoting diversity, often casting models of different ethnicities, ages and body shapes in its shows.

“It’s really beautiful just to see different stages of life,” said the brand’s co-founder Mike Eckhaus.

“It’s fashion, but there’s a sense of how it moves with you in all these different ways.”
