10 perfect gifts for a brand new mum (seriously – she’ll LOVE you for these)

Trine Jensen-Burke

Is there a new mama in your life that you are about to pay a visit for the first time since she welcomed her new arrival?

Lucky you! Nothing is sweeter than those brand-new baby snuggles.

And as for the new mum herself, well, she deserves to be oh-so-spoiled, I think we all agree. And while flowers and chocolate and clothes for the new arrival are all great, we have rounded up ten things she will absolutely LOVE you for bringing.

1. FOOD

Speaking from experience, it is hard to manage do cook or prepare food when you have a baby attached to your boob for large parts of the day (and night). Hence it is always a good idea to bring along food when you visit a new mum.

And don’t just pick up some cake to share with her when you visit – much as you should, of course, do that too – or pizza, pizza is always a winner. No, what she will truly appreciate too, are some dinners for the days ahead, whether home-cooked or store-bought (M&S will be your lifesaver!). Batches of stew or lasagne or soup that she can put in the freezer and eat when needed are all great, as are homemade breads, pizzas and even snack bars for those marathon breastfeeding sessions.

2. New jammies from Yawn London

These are a new discovery of mine, and will now forever more be my go-to gift for any new mama – or, to be honest, anyone, as they are pretty much the most comfortable and luxurious pj’s I have ever owned.

The unique, hand-drawn prints on super-soft, luxury fabrics are all designed by the London-based Yawn team, and the fact that their mission statement is ‘phone off, kettle on, pyjama time…’ just had us from the word go, really.

3. This Works Baby Sleep Products

Oh, how she will come to love you for introducing her to these little miracle workers.

The Baby Sleep collection from one of my favourite beauty brands, This Works, consists of an all-over wash, a body lotion and a pillow spray, all gently scented with lavender to make her baby feel relaxed and tired come evening- and bedtime. Oh, and did I mention the products are, of course, all sulphate-free, paraben-free, phthalate-free and free from any synthetic fragrance too?

Available from ThisWorks.com and well-stocked chemists nationwide.

4. A voucher for the The Well in the Garden spa at Cliff at Lyons

This is pretty much the perfect New Mum Gift, we think.

Spoil a new mum with a voucher to the stunning The Well in the Garden, where the day packages are specifically designed to leave you feeling revived and renewed – also include a light lunch in Trellis, refreshments and time in the relaxation suite.

Pure. Mama. Bliss.

5. Monogram Sheepskin Slippers

She’ll no doubt be up at all hours, and so what better gift than something that’ll keep her feet warm as she tends to her little bundle in the middle of the night? Cosy and warm, yet lightweight, these slippers are defined by a luxe shearling lining and are finished with hard-wearing crepe rubber soles.

6. Avène Thermal Spring Water

Anyone who has just come out the other side of pregnancy and labour, and are now in the throws of midnight feeding sessions deserves all the pampering they can lay their tired hands on if you ask us.

Fluctuating hormones, breastfeeding and lack of sleep can really take its toll on a mamas skin and complexion – and that’s why every new mum should always have a bottle of Avène Thermal Spring Water on hand, we think.

Naturally soothing, anti-irritating and rich in components particularly recommended for the most sensitive skin, this €8,99 skincare hero is the perfect buy for a new mama friend.

7. Luxury Organic bed sheets from White & Green

A good night’s sleep is so important, and never more so than when you are a tired, new mama. That is why we think gifting her some lovely new bed sheets are pretty much encouraging her to get in as much sleep as possible – and making crawling into bed at night feel extra lovely.

I am currently obsessed with the gorgeous, organic sheets and bed linens from Irish company White & Green. Not only are they so pretty to look at (think crisp, white sheets in the cotton), they are also 100 percent free from any nasty chemicals and dyes.

8. A voucher for Josh & Jenna

Instead of YOU deciding on clothes or decor for your friend’s new baby, let her pick some gorgeous outfits or cool decor bits for her brand new bundle herself. We are so madly in love with the gorgeous selection from Irish children’s lifestyle store Josh & Jenna, and we think you new mum friend will be too!

Just check out their amazing collection here.

9. The Perfect Breastfeeding Basket

What is a breastfeeding basket, I hear you ask. And let me enlighten you, as this was genuinely one of the most amazing things I was gifted after having my first baby – and have since been making for any expectant mama I know.

Buy a lovely basket (I am SO crushing on these gold-dipped ones from Notonthehighstreet.com) and fill it with anything the new mama might need to have nearby when she is glued to the sofa feeding.

Here are some things that might come in handy: A couple of bottles of water (she can re-stock her basket as she goes), lip balm, a soft muslin (these aden + anais ones are so pretty), some protein bars, a book, a few magazines, a fully-charged power unit (so she can emergency charge her phone if it dies mid-feed!), and, really, anything else you might think would be clever to have nearby.

The idea of using a basket, I was told when I received my own, was that you can carry it with you, so that you have all your bits wherever you sit down to feed next (bed, sofa, armchair etc.)
