Babies can apparently recognise words within their first days of life

Isn’t this amazing?

While the first few days of your baby’s life can be heartwarming and hard and blissful and exhausting, it turns out that they recognise more than we first thought.

We all can’t stop talking to our little ones from the moment they’re born, telling them how much we love them and gush about how much joy they bring – and it seems newborns can understand more in their first days of life than what we first thought.

The study was conducted in the University of Liverpool and saw researchers analysed brain activity by playing them a three-minute audio clip in the first few days of their lives.

Their brain activity was monitored by a technique where they shine a light into the brain, which then highlights the brain’s activity.

One of the lead researchers, Dr Perrine Brusini, said: “We then had the infants listen to individual words and found that their brains responded differently to the words that they heard than to slightly different words.

The researchers said that because babies can recognise words, it’s so important to talk to them throughout their early life as it will form a close bond while also get their brain working.

“We think this study highlights how sentient newborn babies really are and how much information they are absorbing. That’s quite important for new parents and gives them some insight into how their baby is listening to them.”

Time to get talking!
