Free ‘Bump to Boobie’ guide launched to support new breastfeeding mums

Sophie Collins

Two experienced mums, determined to provide more accessible breastfeeding support, have joined forces to create the “Bump to Boobie” guide.

A comprehensive resource designed to help new mothers, this guide aims to help people navigate the crucial first six weeks of breastfeeding.

Recognising the challenges many mums face when initiating breastfeeding, this guide is filled with essential tips, expert advice, and practical resources aimed at making the early stages of motherhood a little easier.

The “Bump to Boobie” guide, available online, includes a mix of written information, helpful videos, and external links covering key topics, such as getting a proper latch, recognising early signs of breastfeeding issues, and knowing when to seek professional help.

With guidance tailored to each breastfeeding milestone, the resource is designed to support new mums each step of the way.

According to the Bainne Beatha Survey 2021, although 80% of mothers express a desire to breastfeed upon entering the hospital, only 30% are still breastfeeding when they leave.

This stark drop shows the need for better support in those early, formative days, when challenges often deter mothers from continuing.

The “Bump to Boobie” guide addresses this need by offering a sequence of support emails designed to align with a mum’s journey.

New mothers receive emails on Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 5, Day 7, and weekly after that, totalling ten emails over six weeks.

Each email provides timely, relevant information that can help mothers feel prepared, supported, and confident.

The guide is the brainchild of Petrina O’Halloran, founder of Mama’s Boobie Box and a committed breastfeeding advocate.

Petrina partnered with Regina Kincaid, a midwife and lactation consultant from Kindestmilk.com, to ensure the information is evidence-based and aligns with breastfeeding guidelines from respected health organisations, including the HSE, NHS, UNICEF, and WHO.

Speaking about the project, Petrina said: “I know from meeting mums, they really struggle in those first few weeks, especially first-time mums.

“That’s why I felt a guide that could truly hand-hold them through it would be of real benefit.”

Mums interested in accessing the “Bump to Boobie” guide can visit the support page at www.mamasboobiebox.com and select the start date for the guide.

The emails will begin based on the selected date, delivering timely support directly to their inbox.

Petrina and Regina aim to empower new mothers, helping them overcome common early challenges.
