Here’s what to try feeding baby when teething finally starts

Those little milk teeth are making their way to the surface of baby’s gums and our poor tot (and us parents) are about to know all about it.

When babies begin their teething phase there are clues you’ll come to notice. Tell-tale signs include dribbling, increased chewing (they will try and chew just about anything!), reduced appetite, and of course baby will likely become a little more irritable and cranky. It’s all perfectly normal and simply a phase baby needs to get through.

Ironically enough, teething can take place around the same time as when baby begins to eat solids. It sounds like starting to eat solids would be a near impossible task at such a time, but mother nature has thought of everything and it turns out, chewing is actually quite comforting when babies are teething. Try introducing the foods below to give your baby some teething relief.

Carrots

Foods like carrots can help relieve baby’s pain as the pressure from teeth pushing through gums is reduced each time baby munches down on it. Those carrots are full of vitamin A and beta carotene too.

It’s worth noting that raw carrots should be not be given to your baby until they have the ability to chew and swallow hard foods safely. This is usually after 12 months of age. However, steamed vegetables work really well at about seven to eight months. To check if they are perfectly cooked, try squashing them between your finger and thumb to ensure they are soft and turn to mush.

Teetha Biscuits

A lovely little treat for baby is a Teetha Biscuit. Made with bananas, oats, coconut oil and a drop of vanilla extract, they’re easy to hold and sure to bring smiles. You might even enjoy a nibble yourself!

Frozen Banana and Cucumber

Let your little one nibble on some frozen food.

Frozen food will be one of your best friends during the teething process. One of our favourite options is peeled and frozen cucumber. The naturally cool flavour of cucumber will feel like heaven to your little tot, and because it’s primarily made of water, it will be very easy for them to eat. You’ll notice the cooling element really helps reduce pain and irritability in gums. You can also try this with bananas too.

Celery Sticks

Celery isn’t always the tastiest when we grow to be adults, so one positive to starting baby off young on this raw and powerful antioxidant is that they’re likely to actually enjoy it. It’s crunchy (and that means fun to chew), it’s cooling, AND it’s filled with vitamin A which helps improve eye health too.

Ice Lollies

With ice lolly moulds so easily found in stores, this could be a super fun way to say goodbye to baby’s discomfort AND a healthy way of introducing fruit. If you’re stuck for time don’t worry because these are very speedy and easy to make.

See below for some yummy combinations.

Natural Yogurt

Another cool and heavenly treat. Giving baby some natural yogurt might not be weaning him or her onto solids but it’s sure to be kind to hot, sore gums.

Top tip: If your baby refuses to eat or only eats very little. Try giving them some Teeth granules about 15 minutes before meals. They will be more likely to eat if their gums are feeling calmer.

Teetha’s Teething Granules is a homeopathic medicinal product used to relieve symptoms associated with teething. They come in sachets and if your baby is within the three to six month age bracket, simply sit them upright and slowly, using a spoon, give them half a sachet at a time into the front of their mouth. When this has fully dissolved, you can give the rest. If your baby is older, you can pour the sachet into their mouth a little bit at a time, ensuring the granules are dissolving in baby’s mouth.

Teetha’s Teething Gel can be applied using your clean finger and gently dabbing on to the sore area of the gums and teeth. It’s sugar-free and super handy for applying when on the go or running errands.

Best of all, baby will be playing, laughing and smiling again in no time.
