Celebrity parents often like to be a little out there – unusual names and funky birthing practices are par for the course.
Now Hilary Duff has revealed that she consumed her placenta in the form of a smoothie after giving birth recently.
She and partner Matthew Koma welcomed their first baby together last month, a little girl they called Banks.
Speaking on podcast Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy, she said that she was a little apprehensive beforehand but that it turned out to be pretty tasty.
“It was the most delightful smoothie I’ve ever had,” she said.
“I haven’t had a smoothie that delightful since I was ten. It was calorie-filled with juice and fruit and everything delicious.”
Hilary explained that she opted for the smoothie over taking the placenta in tablet form, as some mums do, for a fairly pertinent reason.
“I heard something weird about pills,”she said.
“I heard placenta burps are not ideal.”
It sounds strange but lots of women worldwide do eat their placenta in one form or another after welcoming a new baby.
During pregnancy the placenta helps to feed baby and provide him or her with oxygen, making it rich in nutrients and hormones.
It’s not something everyone recommends though – some doctors in the US have expressed concern that some harmful bacteria in the placenta could survive the preservation process and make it into mum’s system when she eats it.
