From magical fairy trails to zip-lining adventures, there’s something for all the family to enjoy this summer.

With longer days, warmer weather and more free time, summer is the perfect time to indulge in carefree group activities as a family.

Embark on an adventure with your children or be brave and try out a completely new activity. As well as filling the summer days with fun, these activities will bring you closer as a family, making memories to last a lifetime. And who knows? You may even discover a new hobby!

Between zip-lining, inflatable water parks and fairy trails, Ireland is brimming with family-friendly activities. For a summer of fun, make sure you check out some of our favourites below.

Mid Ireland Adventure, Co. Offaly

With a prime position along the River Shannon, Mid Ireland Adventure offers an incredible day out for families on the water. Embark on a guided Kayak Safari at Banagher On The Shannon, or try your hand at archery. For children over 10, Mid Ireland Adventure offers lessons in Stand-Up Paddleboarding.

The surrounding grounds are also the perfect setting for a family bike ride, and rentals are available from Mid Ireland Adventure.

Lough Boora Discovery Park, Co. Offaly

Co. Offaly is home to Lough Boora, an astounding region of natural conservation, and it’s a brilliant place to make memories with your children. Head out on one of the many walking trails here, and keep your eyes peeled for the animals that call this lake home. From birds to badgers to butterflies, Lough Boora boasts incredible wildlife.

As well as being a hub for fishing, cycling and bird-watching, Lough Boora Discovery Park has plenty of attractions geared especially towards children. Fairy Avenue, for instance, is particularly popular with younger visitors. On this special walking trail, your children can try and spot the Fairy Doors from the Irish Fairy Door Company – a truly magical experience.

Baysports, Co. Westmeath

For an unforgettable family day out, visit Baysports in Co. Westmeath, Ireland’s largest inflatable waterpark. Pop a wetsuit on and head out onto the water where a world of fun awaits. Take a whirl down the inflatable slides, bounce on the course, and splash into the water.

As well as the inflatable waterpark, Baysports is also a watersports destination. Rent a kayak, pedal boat or raft and explore the bay, or, for something totally different, split into teams, rent one of Baysports’ dragon boats and challenge each other with a race on the water.

After building up an appetite, head to the BayCafé for a delicious pizza meal.

Lough Derg Blueway

Venture on a family walk or cycle along the tranquil Lough Derg Blueway, or if you’re feeling adventurous, get on the water with a family canoeing tour.

Lough Derg Watersports offer canoeing tours of Lough Derg, and they welcome children over the age of 6 on their various trails. These tours are led by a Canoeing Ireland instructor who can tailor each lesson for your family. As well as exploring the natural beauty of the lake, specialty tours are also available, including sunrise and sunset tours and a paddle picnic.

Zipit Lough Key, Roscommon

Give your children a thrilling day out to remember this summer with a visit to Zipit Lough Key in Co. Roscommon. Once you’re all harnessed up, you’re free to explore the obstacle courses, zip-lines and rope bridges that await for you in the treetops.

Zipit is suitable for children over the age of 7, and a wide variety of circuits are available to suit all levels.

Royal Canal Greenway

Enjoy a peaceful day taking in the natural beauty of Ireland’s midlands with an adventure along the Royal Canal Greenway.

The smooth track has plenty of entry points, meaning that you and your family can pick a route that’s perfect for you. Pause for a picnic along the bank, or venture into one of the many picturesque villages along the way and enjoy a hearty family lunch. Some of our favourite places to stop off along the route include the busy market town of Mullingar and Cloondora, a peaceful harbour village.
