The best family friendly travel destinations: Majorca

Alison Bough

Ah, the island of Majorca – this idyllic Balearic island is one of the most beautiful and often underrated family holiday spots. Think powdery-soft beaches, hidden coves, fun resorts and the stunning capital, Palma.

Here’s our tips for a top-notch family friendly holiday in Majorca:

What

The majestic Mediterranean island of Majorca offers postcard-perfect scenery from the Serra de Tramuntana mountains to stunning sandy beaches, all set against the dramatic backdrop of spectacular cliffs.

Where

If it’s a family-friendly resort you’re after, try Alcudia, Puerto Pollensa or Cala Millor on the north of the island. Day trips to the stunning town of Soller, the village of Valdemossa near Palma and the mountainous region on the west of the island are all worth checking out.

Get there

Fly to Palma de Majorca Airport from Dublin, Cork or Shannon, with a super-short flying time of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Stay at

Protur Monte Safari

This beautiful family resort opened its doors in Cala Millor on the east coast of the island in 2013. This part of the island has a low-key, kid-friendly atmosphere and the area has retained an authentic Majorcan air. With bright, spacious apartments, stunning sea views, lagoon-style pools and if you and your family want activities, this is the place for you: there’s a splash pool packed with slides and fountains, top class daily entertainment shows, a high ropes assault course and loads more.

Club Mac

Nestled in the Port d’Alcudia on Majorca’s northern coastline this 3 star resort offers a huge range of activities to keep kids entertained around the clock. Alcudia is home to one of the island’s longest stretch of beaches as well as a marina packed full of restaurants offering traditional and international cuisines. Club Mac is perfect for all of those water babies out there – a stay at the resort comes with unlimited access to its fantastic on-site waterpark Hidropark Alcudia and a 20% discount on their food and drink. With foam and speed slides designed for all ages your kids will never be bored. Promise.

Family Life Alcudia Pins Hotel

The 3 star Alcudia Pins Hotel in Majorca, located in Playa de Muro, is one of the quieter family holiday destinations on the north of the island. This hotel is just a few metres away from the beach. The complex has a friendly, village-style atmosphere and is ideal for beach lovers. There’s activity programmes for adults and children, and plenty to keep the whole family occupied in this gorgeous resort.

Eat at

If just-off-the-boat fresh fish is your thing, Majorca is going to be your kind of place. Paella is another is one of the region’s most famous specialities. And if you’re feeling more adventurous we recommend lechona (roast suckling pig) and tumbet (aubergines, peppers, potatoes and tomatoes fried in olive oil). Don’t even think about leaving without washing it all down with some of the local wines like Torres des Canong Blanc, Toni Gelabert and Collita de Fruits Callet.

Dining out with the kids? More and more resorts in Majorca are offering all-inclusive board where everything is included in the booking price (i.e. food, snacks, ice cream, drinks etc.) so bear this in mind when planning for family dinners. The harbour in Alcudia is brimming full of great restaurants and Puerto Pollensa has a gorgeous plaza with a range of fantastic eateries and plenty of space for kids to play.

If you’re staying in Playa de Muro in Alcudia, Las Palmeras is not to be missed. Offering great value for money, nightly entertainment and a super friendly service, this place stands out from the rest (Playa de Muro is approximately a 20 minute taxi journey from Alcudia).

For culture vultures

A family outing to the Caves of Drach near Porto Cristo is a brilliant way to spend the afternoon and kids of all ages will enjoy it. A trip to the local markets is also a cool way to see traditional daily life in action on the island.

For the kids

The Katmandu theme park is brimming with spectacular attractions and special effects. Enjoy an upside-down mansion, a musical enchanted forest, an ice cave and more. The Palma Aquarium is also a great day out for the family.

The incredible Pirates Adventure dinner show is another highlight for all the family, an experience you’ll never forget. An afternoon spent in Palma Nova’s Fantasia Mini Golf is the perfect way to escape the beach for a couple of hours. Set in a tropical-themed garden just a few metres from the sand, it feels like a fantasy land with caves, waterfalls and leafy plants.

And if all that isn’t enough, try one of the water parks like Western Water Park in Magaluf, Aqualand Arenal or Marineland in Portals Nous.
