Time to make some memories!
We’ve all lost out on so much over the past year so this summer is all about making happy memories. We may not be able to jet off to Spain and bask in the sunshine, but we’re going to make the most of a summer at home.
Exploring our hometowns and travelling around the Emerald Isle will keep the kids away from the telly and out in the fresh air.
We’ve gathered up the best and most affordable day trips in the Big Smoke so get the planner out and thank us later.
A picnic in IMMA
IMMA is like a hidden gem in the heart of the city. It’s usually a lot less busy than the Phoenix Park and it’s the perfect location for a family picnic. Plus, the gardens are like a little slice of paradise.

99s from Teddy’s Ice Cream
Is it really summer without a famous 99 from Teddy’s in Dun Laoghaire? Jump into the car or even hop on the DART and spend the afternoon strolling along the pier and breathing in the fresh sea air. Be sure to pick up an ice-cream from Teddy’s at the end of the pier. Let’s just hope the chocolate flake shortage is over!

Host an open air cinema at home
Covid restrictions are affecting some of our favourite activities, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on them completely. We’re unsure if open air cinemas will return this summer, but you can host your own at home (weather permitting, of course.)
Splash out on a projector, brave moving a TV outside or even set up a laptop in a cozy tent for the kids. Once they’ve got popcorn and Maltesers then they’ll be happy out. If your kids are old enough then why not introduce them to one of your favourite movies?

Create your own ice-cream parlour
Some families may not feel comfortable venturing out during the summer, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the fun. Why not set up your own ice-cream parlour at home? Let the kids decorate their very own sundaes. The board below is giving us serious inspiration!

Dublin Zoo
Thankfully, Dublin Zoo has re-opened and we’re itching to get back. Parts of the zoo remain closed, but you can enjoy the Outdoor Safari Trail. The trail follows a one-way walking route which allows you to see, hear and learn about the animals. Book tickets online.

Visit your local library
If you’ve got bookworms in your family then a trip to the library on a rainy day is perfect for them. There’s no doubt that we’ll experience a rainy day or two this summer, it is Ireland after all! So, why not head to the library and take out some fairytales or novels that will spark their imaginations.

Canoeing at Donabate Beach
One for the older kiddos in your family, but this would be a lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon. Take in the views and embrace your inner adventurer. Plus, fish and chips for dinner afterwards is always a given.
EPIC Museum Dublin
If you’ve got mini history lovers in your house then why not visit EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, located in Dublin’s Docklands. The museum overs the history of the Irish diaspora and emigration to other countries and your kids are bound to fill their brains with fascinating facts.
Doggy Day Care
So many people have considered adopting a pet during the lockdown, however, it is a major responsibility.
Kids don’t realise all the effort it takes so why teach them about it by volunteering to take care of a friend’s pet when they’re away? It’ll be fun to have a furry friend around, but it’ll also educate the kids about owning a pet.
Plus, it’ll be a perfect excuse to visit your favourite park!
Charity shopping spree
Why not visit your local charity shop and challenge the kids to come up with the best or weirdest outfit they can put together. Your mini fashion designer can embrace their creative side, but this activity is also sustainable and affordable too! Plus, any money spent will help support charity.
Get your skates on
Go back in time to the 80s and get your skates on at The Rink at D12. Dublin’s only skating rink is the perfect place to spend a rainy day. Fear not, beginners are welcome and they limit the number of skaters on the floor.
The kids are bound to have a blast and seeing you skate around the rink is bound to make them laugh. Book here.
National Botanic Gardens
Quite possibly the most beautiful place in the city? This little haven is the dream location for a sunny summers day. Gather up some snacks, the picnic blanket, your sunglasses and plenty of factor 50 and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful blooms.

Walkabout Theatre
This is one solely for parents with teenagers, but the Walkabout Theatre is a great way to immerse yourself in the theatre world in a safe, Covid-friendly way.
Numerous playwrights have created pieces that bring the audience on a thrilling theatre experience throughout Dublin. More here.
We'd love to give a quick shoutout Bewley's Café Theatre 👏

Send a message in a bottle
Why not head to Killiney Beach and send a message in a bottle out to see? Write your letters at home and then head off to the beach in the evening time. Be sure to use glass bottles, preferably with a rubber stopper or cork, and let the bottle set sail across the Irish sea.
You might even get a response so make sure to pop an email on your letter!
Rathfarnham Castle Playground
The playground in Rathfarnham Castle has been hailed the best in Dublin so why not head over there on a sunny afternoon. There’s plenty to keep the kids entertained and if you don’t feel comfortable in a busy playground then why not explore the grounds?
