There is a magical winter festival happening in Waterford right now

Create magical family memories this Christmas.

Trine Jensen-Burke

If you are looking for the perfect festive outing with the family this holiday season, we have found it.

Now in its sixth year, Winterval will return to Waterford once more to enchant the thousands of visitors that make their way here for this truly magical Christmas event.

And if you have been before – get ready for an even bigger and better event this year, as there are more than 20 new additions to the already sparkling programme, most of which are free of charge too.

Winterval is vast, and there are so many things to see and do you can easily spend the whole weekend exploring – meaning, of course, that booking tickets online and deciding on the things you really want to see beforehand can be a great idea.

Christmas really comes alive at Winterval this year, and if you fancy a trip down, here are 5 things you should not miss:

1. Santa’s Kingdom

This is one event you want to make sure you book in advance.

A Christmas festival would be nothing without the man himself and this is another area where Winterval comes up trumps. Santa’s Kingdom is a real treat for all the family with the awestruck amazement in every child’s eye a thing of pure magic.

2. Horse Drawn Sleigh

Enjoy a trip across the city and through the heart of Winterval on the festive horse drawn sleigh. On your journey take in the Christmas markets and carousel in John Roberts Square, the fabulous new Apple Market Winter Village and onto Winterval on Ice on the Waterside.

3. Winterval On Ice

In Waterside Car Park, Winterval On Ice is back and bigger than ever. With a large main rink, a separate kid’s rink and a variety of events, they have something for everyone, making this quintessential Christmas experience a breeze.

4. Winterval Express Train

Jump aboard the Winterval Express Train as it departs from its station on Broad Street. Journey through the heart of the city centre, along The Mall and past Winterval on Ice before enjoying the special Apple Market Winter Village.

5. The Waterford Eye

The Waterford Eye (Ireland’s biggest Ferris Wheel!) is a new attraction this year, based on Merchant’s Quay – and a must if you attend this year’s Winterval, we think. This ride gives the visitor panoramic views of the medieval city.  Note: There are VIP experiences available too – and these include prosecco and non-alcoholic fizz, chocolates and warm blankets. Date night, anyone?!

Where to stay

If you are heading to Waterford this December for Winterval, why not make a weekend out of it? Here are three gorgeour options for your stay in the city:

1. Waterford Castle

If you are looking for a break that is pure winter magic, look no further than Waterford Castle, set on an enchanted 310-acre private island, accessible via a short crossing on the resort’s private car ferry over the King’s Channel.

2. Fitzwilton Hotel

Stay in style and convenience at the chic Fitzwilton Hotel – a mere stone’s throw away from all the action at Winterval.
