The clever car seat accessory that could help save lives

Sive O'Brien

A group of students from a university in Texas have come up with an invention that could potentially save infant lives in the future.

The team of engineers have created a car seat device to help tackle the problem of children being accidentally left in hot cars, and the deaths and injuries resulting from that.

Infant SOS can be added to any infant car seat and will alert parents or passersby that a child has been left in a parked car. The system begins after 30 seconds when LED lights fitted to the seat begin to flash, and an alarm goes off. If the baby is still in the car seat after five minutes, text messages are sent to 10 different recipients.

It also contains a rechargeable cooling system that absorbs heat from the environment and the baby, helping to keep them cool for longer, and giving them more time until help arrives.

One of the creators, Audrey Clayton, says that statistics showing heat-related car deaths work out to one child dying every two days. “Our hope is that our device can prevent this from happening,” she adds.
