The Books That Every Child Should Read…

HerFamily

World Book Day is coming around again – Thursday to be precise – which got us thinking about what books we loved when we were growing up.

There are so many classic novels which never get old and can be passed down from generation to generation.

This time last year, Census Wide surveyed over 2,000 parents and asked them to name the books that every child should read.

These were the top 10…

  1. Charlie and The Chocolate Factory- Roald Dahl
  2. Alice in Wonderland- Lewis Carroll
  3. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe- C.S. Lewis
  4. Winnie The Pooh- A.A.Milne
  5. Black Beauty- Anna Sewell
  6. James and The Giant Peach- Roald Dahl
  7. The BFG-Roald Dahl
  8. A Bear Called Paddington- Michael Bond
  9. Treasure Island- Robert Louis Stevenson
  10. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn- Mark Twain

Others that made the top 50 included Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Son, Oliver Twist, Charlotte’s Web, The Hobbit, The Twits and Funny Bones.

To celebrate the world’s biggest celebration of reading this year, schoolchildren can redeem a €1.50 World Book Day token which can be exchanged for one of eleven specially published books or can be put towards a book of their choice at a participating book store.

The tokens are valid until March 27th and you can find out more about this year’s events at the World Book Day website here.
