Cholesterol: Do you know your number? It could save your life…

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Experts have warned that Irish women are avoiding a simple test that could potentially save their lives.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the biggest killer in Ireland, responsible for one in two deaths amongst women, however, new research commissioned by Flora pro.activ amongst over 45s shows that half of women are unaware of their cholesterol number.

Those aged 45-54 are the least likely to have been tested.

Irene Gibson, Director of Prevention Programmes,  Croí, the heart and stroke charity, said:

“What is especially concerning about the findings of the Flora pro.activ study is that women in the menopausal years (aged 45-54) are the least likely to have their cholesterol checked and yet this is the time when their risk of heart attack and stroke is significantly increased.

“Menopause is strongly associated with an increase in total and LDL cholesterol and a decline in HDL levels.”

Men were found to be more likely to talk to their GPs and family members, while women tend to confide in friends, although one in five said they wouldn’t talk to anyone about their health. As many as a third of all adults over 45 admitted that they have had a health concern they haven’t shared with a loved one. Most avoid the topic for fear of causing stress or worry while 40 per cent said that talking about their health made them feel uncomfortable.

The good news is that up to 90 per cent of heart disease and stroke is preventable through lifestyle change and risk factor modification.

The following five tips will reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease:

  • Get your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugars checked regularly
  • Quit smoking
  • Exercise and be physically active
  • Make healthy food choices
  • Take time out for yourself
