More than 50 per cent of women suffer menstrual cramps, for which they consume large amounts of painkillers.  Now the inventors of a new device claim to have discovered the Holy Grail: a drug-free 'off' switch for period pain. With one single touch, the tiny Livia device claims to close the "pain gates" by stimulating the nerves and blocking the pain from passing to the brain. The technology is based on the "Gate Control Theory". Livia transmits a pulse that keeps the nerves "busy". Busy nerves means that the nerve-gate is closed, so pain signals cannot pass through and go unfelt. The company says there are no side effects, it's impossible to build up a tolerance and it relieves pain for as long as it's on. Result! What's more, once you buy a Livia device, you can use it for years. You simply attach the pulse stickers to where you feel pain, press the 'ON' button and adjust the intensity depending on the level of pain. It eliminates strong menstrual pains and can even help endometriosis. In cases of severe pain Livia provides a significant relief, reducing pain by "about 80 percent", according to the website. After a funding campaign received almost twice as much support as expected, the makers of the Livia device hope to have it on shelves by October, retailing at $149 (around €130). We can't wait to give this clever little invention a try.
