Dr. Doireann explained why mums are ‘forgetful’
Dr Doireann O’Leary has addressed the myth about mums being forgetful in the best way.
Mums are often slated for having ‘baby brain’ or for being distracted, but the myth actually isn’t true.
She explained that mums need to be more gentle on themselves because they’re juggling more than normal.
She said: “Moms, you are not forgetful. You just have way too much to remember. The maternal mental load is medically recognised to have an impact on memory, concentration, and cognition.”
The mum continued: “Moms today are not only working more hours than ever before, we’re also spending more time with our children than previous generations.”
She said the “medically recognised” maternal mental load is bigger than ever before so it’s only natural if mums forget things every now and then.
Doireann acknowledged that mums are currently juggling ‘competing demands’ and don’t have the mental capacity to remember absolutely everything.
“If you mix up an appointment every now and again or you forget something at the supermarket, go easy on yourself because you are doing a great job in an increasingly demanding environment,” she added.
We couldn’t agree with Dr. Doireann more. We need to go easier on ourselves.
