Feeling Anxious Mamas? This 4-Ingredient Morning Drink Will Help You Before You Lose Your Sh*t

Sive O'Brien

Had one too many coffees this weekend, mamas? Feel like you exist from one coffee until the next, until you reach for the vino?! Yup. That is me….

Until I discovered this little lovely, and it’s actually helping to gradually cut down on my caffeine quota. For real.

I know, I eye-roll too when someone promises something that replaces God’s nectar. Pffft. Claims that a non-caffeinated drink will replace coffee without you feeling one bit put-out? AS IF. Without coffee, I would be a narky cow, a less efficient editor, and an impatient mum. I know that; as does my husband.

But, the latest new foodie craze to hit clean-eating fanatics (or just healthy mamas) in search of the next big thing to cleanse the body without having to drink something putrid to purge the demons is…. turmeric latté.

And it’s actually totally DELICIOUS! The skeptic in me questioned why on earth I would substitute one of my beloved daily coffees for a cup of turmeric latté? Well, quite simply, it’s to chill you the f*ck out.

Turmeric is amazing for anxiety, so you know, when you fly off the handle and feel like you’re about to lose control at home with kids coming at you from every angle, a little cup of this might just help you handle that situation a bit better. It’s also (supposed to be) amazing for insomnia – something I don’t suffer from because I could sleep standing up.

Turmeric is one of nature’s oldest, most amazing superfoods – used in India for thousands of years to fight inflammation. It’s also high in antioxidants, healthy fats (especially when using coconut milk), but also manganese and iron (found in turmeric). You can add peppercorns too which actually enhances the absorption of curcumin (the main component found in turmeric) in our bodies.

So while it’s chilling you out, helping you sleep, it’s super-charging your system, helping to keep colds and flus away too. Not too shabby for a morning cuppa, really.

In search of the best recipe, I stumbled across this amazing blog Sprouted Routes; the site is full of really easy ways to be healthy, without making you feel guilty for not being healthy all of the time. After trying a few other recipes, I can attest, this is the one that tastes the yummiest. And now I’m just a teeny bit obsessed with it (and this blog too, it’s a must-read).

What’s in it:

  • 1 cup milk of choice (unroasted almond or coconut is delish)
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 heaped teaspoon coconut oil

Optional: 1 teaspoon liquid sweetener of choice (honey, maple syrup, coconut syrup)

If you want an extra kick, or for this drink to replace your morning coffee, the blogger suggests swapping the 1 cup of milk for 3/4 cup of brewed coffee and 1/4 cup of milk of choice, then proceed with recipe as directed. Simples.

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, heat milk, turmeric, vanilla, (pepper, salt to taste and sweetener if using) until very warm, not boiling. Transfer to blender and blend or use your Nutribullet with coconut oil until frothy. Drink immediately.
  • Serves 1 mother in search of sanity and calmness.
