Water is essential to all life. After all, us adults are made up of 50 to 60 percent water, while our newborns are made up of 78 percent H2O.

Water is needed for carrying nutrients to our cells, controlling body temperature and removing waste products from our body’s system. This is why us humans can last around three weeks without food, but without water… we’re soon in trouble.

Living in a country like Ireland, the importance of water might not cross everyone’s mind, as clean drinking water is so easily accessible, whether it be from our tap at home, from public mains or private well water.

Although we’re one of the most developed and wealthiest nations in the world, there are certain factors that still affect our water supply. This can be caused by the type of soil or rock in certain areas, and of course, pollution.

An example of the sort of dangers we might find in water is lead. Lead is extremely dangerous. When exposed to lead through food and water, adults absorb 3 to 10 percent, while our kids absorb around 40 to 50 percent. Bottle fed babies are most at risk, as formula is often made up from drinking water.

Lead is particularly harmful to children. If consumed, it is passed through the brain, liver and kidneys, as well as bones, where it can actually become stored.  Kids who are affected by lead can suffer from problems with brain development and their nervous system. In adults, it can also cause high blood pressure and kidney damage.

There are measures that we can take however to improve our drinking water and it might only take a few hundred euro to directly take a proactive step and improve our family’s overall health.
