Norovirus cases are rising in Ireland- here are the symptoms to look out for

Kat O'Connor

It is the most common stomach bug in Ireland.

Norovirus cases have been rising in both Ireland and the UK.

The HSE has advised those who are suffering from the virus to follow precautions in a bid to limit the spread.

But what are the symptoms parents should look out for?

Norovirus causes both diarrhoea and vomiting. Other symptoms include a fever, headaches, sore limbs and stomach cramps.

The virus tends to clear up without medical treatment, but you can take painkillers to ease some of the symptoms. One of the most important things to do if you’re suffering from norovirus is to stay hydrated.

Those with the virus have been advised against visiting their GP because the stomach bug spreads so easily. Norovirus is one of the most common stomach bugs in Ireland, but it tends to peak around the winter.

Doctors have stressed that antibiotics will not cure norovirus. The best thing a patient can do is to simply let the virus run its course.

Parents have also been advised to keep children out of school until they’ve been symptom-free for two days.

The virus spreads incredibly quickly in places like schools, especially among younger children who do not practice proper hand hygiene.

The best way to avoid norovirus is by practicing good hand hygiene.

If someone in your house has norovirus then be sure to disinfect contaminated areas. You should also wash contaminated items like bedding or clothing.
