Nutritionist explains why eating a banana for breakfast isn’t the best choice

Trine Jensen-Burke

Well, this is surprising.

We don’t know about you guys, but we often – on those most time-pressured of days – have to resort to grabbing a banana as we run out the door and call it breakfast.

And we even felt moderately OK about that – I mean; bananas are healthy, they give you energy and are a fruit, for crying out loud. As in; one of your recommended five a day, surely?

But now it seems science is saying something else.

Turns out, eating a banana first thing is not as good for us as we thought.

Here is what nutritional expert Dr Daryl Gioffre had to say to beauty website Byrdie :

“Bananas seem like the perfect option to grab and go in the morning, but with a closer look you’ll find that bananas, when eaten alone, aren’t the best option because they’re 25% sugar and moderately acidic.”

Yikes.

It seems a banana won’t suffice, guys.

“They’ll give you a quick boost [of energy], but you’ll soon be tired and feeling hungry’ Gioffre explained.

Instead, he recommends pairing the banana with some healthy fat, like for instance nuts or avocado.

“Because bananas are acidic, you’ll have to neutralise the acid to get the benefits of potassium, fibre and magnesium without the sugar rush.”
