HerFamily

Cases of excess lead and pesticides in Dublin water have been all over the news, of late. In fact, some places in Ireland still don’t have clean drinkable water, despite having to pay water charges. Now it’s more critical than ever to be mindful of your water quality. But how do you address any issues?

You could install one of these systems in your home, depending on the issue with your water. Here’s the lowdown on seven solutions…

herfamily-water-pure

1. General filter

Why you need it It will get you started in the water filter game. Not all water that comes from a faucet is clear and pure.

How it works It is a comprehensive system just for your drinking water. The under-the-sink system really does work to remove base level impurities. Buy €248

2. Ph correction units

Why you need it Did you ever get a a metallic taste in your mouth after drinking water from the tap? Low pH levels can cause chemicals to leak from pipes into your water, we’re talking Lead, Copper, Phosphorus and Iron.

How it works This system balances the pH of your water from acid to alkaline quality. Buy €1,000 Pricey but, hugely effective.

4. Reverse osmosis units

Why you need it If you live close to a beach or river it will benefit you. The differences between this and other systems is that it’s commonly used for removing effluent and salt from sea-water to make it drinkable.

How it works Sediment in your water? This natural system removes large particles from your water. Buy €180 (they increase depending on the size of the tank in your home.)

5. UV light filters

Why you need it Little bacteria can be in your water without your knowledge. This destroys 99.9 per cent of micro-organisms.

How it works  Itchy skin? This system removes microbiological pollutants like moulds, spores and yeasts from water. Cost: €650 but very effective for allergy-sufferers and to clear the skin.

6. Iron and Magnesium Aeration filter

Why you need it If you are not living in the city your water can be affected. Water from Irish wells and springs can appear colourless at first but then develop an orange, dark brown or black shade that will stain when exposed to oxygen.

How it works The system removes impurities that exist in groundwater that originates from certain types of rock. Pay €895 at present, via on-site offer.

7. Water softeners

Why you need it Have you got chalk stains on your glasses? Water softeners stop the horrible white deposits that build up in your dishwasher and create a residue on literally, everything.

How it works Are you a city dweller? Water filters alleviate the problem of excess lime in your water that makes the water hard. It is usually worse in inner city areas. Pay €399
