Vicky explained that she was with Charlie in spirit, as she always is.

Irish cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan has sent a message of support to Charlie Bird for his book launch, which she unfortunately missed as she was experiencing some pain.

Earlier this week, Charlie Bird launched his book, Climb with Charlie, which documents his monumental climb of Croagh Patrick in April.

While his friend Vicky couldn’t be there in person, she sent a video message to Charlie, which he subsequently shared on Twitter.

In it, Vicky says: “Unfortunately, I couldn’t be there for the launch today Charlie. As you know, we both have our ups and downs with the illnesses we’re dealing with, and unfortunately for me, pain is a huge issue at the moment.”

She explained that travelling and sitting in uncomfortable chairs is simply not an option.

“It affects me for at least a day or two afterwards,” she said.

Vicky then explained that she was with him “in spirit”.

“I wish you the very best with the launch,” she continued. “It’s an absolutely amazing book. There’s some fabulous photos in it from all around the country.”

She added that the book is a “fantastic achievement” and encouraged her followers to go out and purchase it, especially as all of the profits will go towards the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

“I know that that’s something that’s very close to Charlie’s heart,” she added.

Vicky finished off by saying: “Wishing you all the very best today Charlie with the launch of your book and I really hope that it takes off and that lots of people buy copies and that you make a lot of money for Motor Neurone Disease because I know how much you’ve put into this.”

Charlie shared Vicky’s message and described her as his “great pal”.
