In partnership with the National Dairy Council, Erica Drum visited Killowen Farm for an inside look into the process.

We all know how important it is to shop local and support Irish businesses, and that’s particularly true when it comes to putting food on the table.

One Irish dairy product that we’re proud to have stocked in our fridge is natural yogurt. Available in a wide range of flavoursome varieties, we can count on producers like Killowen Farm for the ideal addition to breakfasts, snack time or as an after-dinner snack.

Indeed, these little jars of deliciousness always deserve a spot on our shopping list, not only because of the quality of the product, but because we can get behind more responsible farming practices.

In partnership with the National Dairy Council, Erica Drum headed off to Ireland’s sunny-south east to pay Killowen Farm a visit, and to learn how they take it from cow to pot in one day. During her trip, Erica met farmer Nicholas Dunne, who was more than happy to give her a grand tour.

After getting acquainted with the farm’s herd of dairy cows, Erica discovered the family ties that keep Killowen Farm thriving. Nicholas is an eighth-generation farmer, and he works with his two daughters and son, his wife and his siblings. Given the strong family connection, Nicholas is determined to mind the land to the very best of his ability, and sees himself as its caretaker.

In addition to the Dunne family, Killowen Farm is a big employer, with a team of up to 90 people on the payroll. A big team is necessary, especially when you consider Killowen Farm’s speedy operation. The cows are milked in the morning. A few hours later, the milk is pumped into the factory, where it is turned into yogurt that night. The next morning, it’s mixed with fruit and packed, and then it’s ready to be consumed.

Throughout the process, Killowen Farm prides itself on its commitment to all things natural, and that’s evident when you look at what’s in each glass pot. As Nicholas makes it clear, the product is just milk, cultures, fresh fruit and little sugar.

As well as managing the day-to-day, Killowen Farm is focused on the future, and as a result, they are implementing sustainable farming practices including reed beds and solar panels.
