Brought to you by Children In Hospital Ireland
Going to the hospital can be scary and overwhelming at any age, but especially when you're young.
Between broken bones and unexplained illnesses that can creep up, almost all children will need to take a trip to the hospital at some point or other in their early lives.
This can be a stressful experience for parents as they navigate how best to support their child through the experience.
For over 55 years, Children In Hospital Ireland (CIH) has been working alongside parents to support them through their child's hospital journey.
From their various free resources to their 400+ play volunteers placed across 15 hospitals nationwide to make sure the little ones still get the chance to play while in the hospital, CIH aims to improve the hospital experience for families all across Ireland.
Most recently they have established a Family Support service that offers practical information and support to families before, during, and after their child's inpatient or outpatient hospital visit.
They also have staff in Dublin’s children’s hospitals on a weekly basis available to chat with parents and answer any questions. For those outside the city, don’t worry; you can still avail of this service by email or phone.

Ruby Walsh, a CIH Family Support Officer, offers some advice on how best to prepare and support your child if they have to undergo a test or procedure.
She notes the importance of informing yourself on the procedure so you can best answer any questions that your little one might ask. You can do this by speaking to your child’s medical team or checking out CIH’s InformationHub for further information.
Their online InformationHub is a great tool and your one-stop shop for any queries that may pop into your head about your child’s hospital visit.
Walsh also cites the importance of remaining calm and present with your child during the procedure and letting them know it's okay if they get upset. The procedure can always be paused or stopped!
CIH's Family Support Team provides valuable information and amazing support to families whose child is going to the hospital.
