Comedian Enya Martin creates special video message to the class of 2020

Melissa Carton

Many students across Ireland will miss out on their graduations this year.

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve seen a few different videos from famous faces wishing the class of 2020 well, but most of them are speaking to the American teens finishing up high school.

Finishing up secondary school in Ireland is always going to be a little different than finishing up high school in the States. For one there’s a lot less emphasis on signing yearbooks and more on signing each other’s school shirts.

I kept my eyes peeled to see if one had been made for Irish children finishing up secondary school and sure enough, one of Ireland’s favourite comedians, Enya Martin, has created a special message to the class of 2020.

Enya addresses all the Sixth Class and Sixth Year students who never got to say a proper goodbye due to schools closing during lockdown.

I started getting a bit emotional when she started talking about how you make friends for life in secondary school and that she wishes she could go back and hang out with her friends everyday like that again.

I remember people saying this to me when I was still in secondary school and thinking that they were mad because I just couldn’t wait to finish school.

Now looking back they were right in some ways (not in everything because no power in this world is dragging me back in Math class) but I really do miss getting to see my friends everyday like I did in school.

When talking about college and the future and things to come Enya very beautifully says;

“If no one comes knocking on your door, build your own door.”

Enya said it all really but just from myself, congratulations to the class of 2020, good luck in your Leaving Cert results and most importantly good luck in your future adventures.
