Mr Potato Head is now gender neutral to “promote gender equality”

Kids will now be able “to imagine and create their own Potato Head family.”

The people behind the famous potato head toy have decided to progress with the times and have done something no one expected. It brings me great excitement to report that Mr and Mrs Potato Head are going gender neutral.

Isn’t it great to think that our children will grow up in a world that sees equality and accepts everyone for who they are in a world with gender neutral potatoes?

The company behind the potato toys has decided to take away their titles “to promote gender equality and inclusion”.

Instead of Mrs and Mr Potato Head they will be known as simply Potato Head. We love to hear it!

Bloomberg reports that they saw “sales of Barbie dolls soar” after the famous doll started to come in different skin tones and body types.

Later this year Hasbro will sell Potato Head family kits. “They’ll come with two non-gendered adult potatoes, one baby potato and 42 accessories, according to a spokeswoman. That will let kids decide the parents’ gender.”

Now they want the potato toys to offer more diversity so “the iconic brand will be reimagined for the modern consumer.” Kids will now be able “to imagine and create their own Potato Head family,” said Hasbro.

Mr and Mrs Potato Head will still be around even with the rebrand, the company tweeted: “Hold that Tot – your main spud, MR. POTATO HEAD isn’t going anywhere! While it was announced today that the POTATO HEAD brand name & logo are dropping the ‘MR.’ I am proud to confirm that MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD aren’t going anywhere and will remain MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD.”

Hasbro general manager Kimberly Boyd told business magazine Fast Company “The way the brand currently exists – with the “Mr” and “Mrs” – is limiting when it comes to both gender identity and family structure. Culture has evolved.”

Mr Potato Head first went on sale in 1952 and Mrs Potato Head was launched not too long after the following year.
This is just the latest move in a list of improvements Hasbro has been making to its much loved Potato Head. Last year, the company announced that would start making the toys from “plant-based plastic” and have less plastic packaging.
