Postcards to your Granny is a project to re-connect teens and their grandparents

Melissa Carton

A really great idea.

Growing up I was always very close to my grandparents, especially my maternal grandmother who I saw every day.

As a teenager, I was baffled when other kids my age said that they hardly ever saw their grandparents and rarely thought to get in touch with them.

Even now with all the technology, we have many people from older generations report feeling lonely and isolated and longing for some company.

A new initiative has started up in Ireland and I personally think it’s a great thing that all parents should encourage their children to get on board with.

Postcards to your Granny is a project that hopes to re-connect teenagers and young people with their older relatives.

Even though the name of the project is Postcards to your Granny, it’s not just for teens to get in touch with their grandmothers but also grandfathers, great-aunt and uncles or even elderly neighbours.

The aim is to bring back pen to paper and for children to send a postcard to an older relative or even send some to a local nursing home and really brighten someone’s day.

I think it’s a really great idea not just because it helps children re-connect with their relatives but also because it teaches them how to be kind and thoughtful towards others.

It’s a really sweet project and all it will cost you is a pack of stamps.
