The Friends reunion special could easily become a new series, if the one-off goes well

The One Where They Make All The Money.

Unless you have for some reason been living under a rock (or simply not engaging in social media), chances are you’ve heard about the Friends reunion.

A one-off HBO special that’s set to send everybody’s nostalgia meters into overdrive, the reunion will see Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, and Jennifer Aniston reunite properly for the first time in 16 years.

Gavin & Stacey left shaking.

However, although the reunion has appeased fans across the globe, the fact remains that the special will still be an “unscripted” return to the Friends soundstage – meaning that it’s not going to be a regular episode of Friends as we know it.

A shame, but listen, we’ll take what we can get.

Despite this, rumours have been abound around the potential for a whole new season of Friends if the one-off goes well.

After all, it wouldn’t make all that much sense for the cast to get together, kick things off, make an abundance of cash, and then never speak of it again.

The one-off reunion is expected to be worth a staggering £350 million, so naturally the cast are going to be making their fair share of cash from simply hanging out, chatting about old times, and hypothesising about whether or not Emma ever woke up from her nap.

It’s not entirely impossible then that the reunion episode will eventually become a whole series, once the cast and producers get a real taste of the demand that’s already there – and an audience that’s willing to watch whatever is put in front of them.

Naturally, some eh, sources from Hollywood have already begun peddling this rumour. And in fairness to them, they may actually be onto something.

“Officially, the deal has been signed for a one-off,” they told The Sun.

“But the hope is that once everyone sees how well it’s received and how much love there is for the show, another series will be agreed and commissioned.

“If this happens, agents will be licking their lips. This will be the kind of small-screen payday the likes of which has never been seen. Including streaming rights, cast fees, spin-offs and merchandising, this could be TV’s inaugural billion-pound contract.”

The one-off Friends special will be airing on HBO Max later this year.
