Neutral basics: Your entire summer capsule wardrobe – in just 7 H&M buys

Trine Jensen-Burke

All summer long.

If you love the idea of a simple, paired-back wardrobe where all your clothes work hard – AKA can be worn mixed and matched with everything else in there, you are going to love these seven H&M buys right now.

We are on the brink of July and high summer – and I am confident our spell of sunny weather will return. After all, we bloody well deserve it.

And when it does, I am planning on living in a combination of these outfits. When it comes to summer, neutrals in different tones and shades are the most versatile colours in your wardrobe, and can also without fail be worn with other bits you no doubt already possess. Such as a great pair of skinny light-blue jeans, a grey t-shirt, a denim jacket, a white summer dress or a flowy, oversized shirt.

1. Twisted rope sandals

These look so much more expensive than they are – I love the chunky style of the rope, and will wear them with both dresses, linen pants and my jeans, for days when the sun fails to show up.

2. Flounce-tipped playsuit

Again a piece that looks more expensive than it really is. I love the simple tone of this, and the frills make it easy to wear more dressy with some strappy sandals, or paired with a denim jacket and some white sneakers for a daytime look.

3. Draped strappy top

Love how simple and elegant this top is – great with a skirt, or the shorts below for really hot and sunny days.

4. Straw hat with grosgrain band

Because everyone needs a straw hat in their wardrobe, and this one, with its grosgrain band, is chic enough for both city-centre brunch-dates and trips to the beach.

5. Calf-length skirt

Super-flattering, super-versatile, this skirt is about to become a new summer wardrobe favourite. The best bit? It’s got pockets!

6. Button-front dress

The vertical lines are so flattering on every shape, and I think this dress will look perfect for almost every occasion this summer, from day trips to the seaside to back garden BBQs.

7. Paper bag shorts

Slightly baggy shorts are so incredibly flattering, and I love the neutral shade of these ones. Pair with the rope sandals above and pretty much any t-shirt (or white shirt) in your wardrobe for the perfect, laid-back, yet chic, summer look.
