4 ways to prevent your pipes from freezing during Storm Emma

Orlaith Condon

The cold temperatures could cause problems.

We’ve spent the last number of days preparing for the rough weather that Storm Emma is due to bring with her.

However, with increasingly low temperatures predicted for the coming days, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your home.

And one way to be prepared is to ensure you’re taking steps to prevent your pipes from freezing, and even bursting, during the cold snap.

Here are four ways to help stop your pipes from freezing.

1. Heating

While you may be dreading the bill at the end of it, leaving the heating on during the cold weather will obviously help keep the pipes warm. But you don’t have to have the heating up as high as normal, keeping it ticking overnight will do wonders.

2. Let the tap run

Again, might go against your instincts when it comes to saving money, but leaving the faucet on your tap drip slightly overnight will relieve the pressure on the system, and therefore prevent the pipe from bursting.

3. Heating tape

Applying heating tape directly to the pipes will again help keep them warm and prevent them from freezing.

4. Keep the doors open

If your pipes are kept behind closed cabinets, keep the doors open to let the heat from the rest of the house run through the pipes. Keeping the interior doors open throughout the house will also help the heat flow right through.
