4-year-old killed after another child accidentally discharged gun

Laura Grainger

Reports of children getting ahold of guns are unfortunately common in the US.

A four-year-old girl in the US was killed in an accidental shooting involving another child.

The incident happened at around 6pm last night at a home in Englewood, Chicago, when the other child found the gun.

It accidentally discharged and 4-year-old Makalah McKay was struck in the chest, Chicago police said.

The child was rushed to a nearby children’s hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A man at the scene was taken in for questioning on the details surrounding the shooting. Police are continuing to investigate.

Local activist Greg Sherman told NBC Chicago: “Every situation like this is tragic; babies, death, this is tough. This is tough on the community.”

Police across the US are urging gun owners to keep their firearms locked up and well out of the reach of children following numerous reports of children accidentally discharging weapons.

Less than a month ago, a toddler in Kansas injured herself and her sleeping father when she got ahold of his gun.

Just two weeks ago, a mother and her teenage son were arrested in California after the teen allegedly shot his toddler sister in their car.
