The cost of an abortion in Ireland is set to be around €300, according to new reports.
Women seeking an abortion will be able to do so through their GP or a local primary care clinic, medical sources have told
The Irish Independent.
After they initially contact the clinic or their GP, there will be a 72-hour waiting period.
Two separate GP visits will also be required.
These are expected to be more expensive than standard GP visits as patients be thoroughly assessed to make certain that they are suitable for a medical termination using abortion pills.
It's during the second GP visit that the patients will be given the pills, which ends the pregnancy in a similar way to miscarriage.
The tablets will come under the state's
drug payment scheme, which limits the cost of medication at €134.
It's thought that every year, a significant number of Irish women use abortion pills ordered online to end their pregnancies themselves without a doctor's supervision.
These pills can be bought for less than €100.
The Minister for Health Simon Harris has vowed to legislate for terminations as soon as possible, saying he wants to see a law passed by the autumn.
