Amanda Cassidy

Amy Huberman is very busy.

The actor and author will be back on our screens again in her new RTE drama ‘Striking Out’ in the coming weeks. She says a teaser for the show will be shown this week during the Late Late Toy Show.

We caught up with Amy at the launch of the Bord Gais Energy Student Theatre Awards which she is judging for the third year.

The highly successful awards are open to primary and secondary school students around Ireland and will culminate in a ceremony in May next year.  Amy was delighted to be involved as she is passionate about encouraging young people to act on their flair for drama.

Will you be watching the Toy Show?

“I haven’t watched it for the last couple of years but I think this year I will because obviously with smallies it takes on a whole new meaning so I’m looking forward to watching it for the fun of that. It always feels like it’s the start of Christmas too”

What about Christmas traditions?

“I think it’s about making things our own now, and creating memories. It is the little things like getting our tree and going to see Santa. We are still being kids ourselves and heading to our in-laws and eating their food! We will be doing Elf on the Shelf this year. I wasn’t sure about it last year, I though it was a bit weird like it was constant surveillance but I like it now and it works as a disciplinary tool…always watching!

How would you feel about Sadie or Billy (Amy’s a mum of two children aged 4 and 2) following your footsteps into the world of drama?

“I would hope I would be the type of parent that would guide them and support them to try a few different things. Maybe go to college, on top of doing other things but so long as they are happy. Even if they did it for a few years and then try something else. You have to look at your circumstances and see if it is realistic or see what personality type they are as some people can’t deal with not knowing what they are doing from one day to the next.”

When asked if Sadie loves musicals, Amy spoke about a very important performance they have planned:

“Sadie, like all kids, loves music and dancing – and noise. She is still so little but she’s leaning her songs for her Nativity play at her Montessori and it is so cute. To hear her practicing is adorable. I actually take them to a music class on Saturdays, and it is lovely to see them at it because again, its loud, noisy and they can bang drums.”

Do you find it hard to juggle motherhood with being an actor in such a sporadic industry?

“It can be difficult, but now I really appreciate the time I have at home. So when I didn’t have kids, I would find it hard to be in between work. They say everyone needs routine but this industry is not great for planning, but I really do enjoy that time in between when I am not working and I have stopped wishing it away. Life is busier now, and it is less all about myself. It does make travel harder, but you have to just go with it really”

Amy says next year already looks like a busy year for her- she has an exciting TV role which is due to start early next year and while she can’t reveal the details, she assures us it is NOT Dancing with the Stars…

“I would be so bad at that! So bad. I did Pilates the other day and my legs are killing me!”
