Baby Abandoned at Airport Appeals For Mum to Come Forward

Katie Mythen-Lynch

A thirty-year-old man who was abandoned as a baby at Gatwick Airport has launched a fresh appeal for information on the parents who deserted him.

Steven Hydes was discovered by an airport worker in the ladies toilets of the airport on April 10, 1986.

Thought to be approximately 10 days-old, the baby was wearing two babygros and a tartan shawl and appeared to be well cared for. Nicknamed ‘Gary Gatwick’ after the airport’s teddy bear mascot, Steven was later adopted into a loving family with three sisters after his mother failed to come forward.

Today It always makes me stop and think. I have an amazing mum who has brought me up and I will be spending it with her…

Now a dad of two himself, Steven longs to find out more about his blood relatives. A DNA test revealed his family are from England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany or France and there appear to be two matches on an ancestry website but both individuals have yet to log in and check their messages.

Speaking to Sky News, he said “it’s the not knowing,” that’s the most difficult thing to bear:

“To me it’s just a blank space that everyone else seems to have.” he said.

“There’s also things like your medical history that others take for granted and I don’t have that.

“You go to the doctors and they say ‘does this run in your family’ and I say ‘actually I don’t know’.

“I’d just like to know what happened, it will explain more about myself, complete me in a way.”

Anyone with any information that might help Steven can email  garygatwick1986@hotmail.com.
