Doctors are calling it a miracle.

Reports have emerged from Brazil that a baby who was shot while still in the womb has survived the attack.

The mother of the unborn child, Claudineia dos Santos Melo, was out shopping for nappies in Rio de Janeiro when a stray bullet from a gunfight hit her through the hip. She was almost nine months pregnant.

The baby was delivered via emergency Caesarean section on Friday and was named Arthur. He is paraplegic but doctors are hopeful that he will continue to make a recovery.

The mother of the baby, Claudineia, is currently in a stable condition.

Gynocologist overseeing the situation José Carlos Oliveira called Arthur’s survival “a miracle happening before our eyes.”

“Today, he is paraplegic, but anything can happen in the life of this child.”

The baby’s father, Klebson da Silva, called his son “victorious,” while the mother’s brother, Leonardo dos Santos, told BBC Brazil that the rest of the family were praying together for Arthur’s recovery.
