Zika virus: Brazil declares an end to the national emergency

Niamh Maher

The country has released a statement to The World Health Organisation.

Brazil’s Ministry for Health cited a “decrease in cases of Zika and microcephaly throughout the country “. Officials recorded 95% fewer cases between January and April than during the same period last year.

The illness has been linked to birth defects in countries across the globe since the outbreak began in 2015.

The Zika scare was at its peak just before the Rio Olympics in 2016, with over 30 countries reporting an increase in infections.

It was linked to birth defects including microcephaly, where babies are born with abnormally small heads and restricted brain development.

The World Health Organisation lifted its own international emergency in November of last year.
