Brendan Gleeson had a great reaction to Jimmy Kimmel’s Irish joke at the Oscars

“Five Irish actors are nominated tonight, which means the odds of another fight on stage just went way up.”

It was a disappointing night for Banshees of Inisherin as the film went away empty-handed at the Oscars this year.

However, the cast of Martin McDonagh’s film still seemed to enjoy themselves amongst the festivities last night. The large Irish cohort at the ceremony was not ignored.

Jimmy Kimmel noted a large number of Irish contenders this year in his opening monologue as he took hosting duties. He began by saying, “It’s been some years for diversity and inclusion. We have nominees from every corner of Dublin.”

The initial joke went down very well and got a chuckle out of the Banshees crew.

Kimmel then followed it up with, “Five Irish actors are nominated tonight, which means the odds of another fight on stage just went way up.”

The camera panned back to Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, who threw up their fists at each other jokingly. It was a pretty outdated quip from the talk show host but the two reacted as best they could, so fair play to them.

It didn’t stop there for the awful ‘Oirish’ jokes, unfortunately. Later on in the ceremony, Kimmel asked Farrell – on behalf of a ‘fan’ – just what it was he was saying in Banshees. Farrell was quick to hit back with, “I’d like him to go on YouTube and check out the SNL skit from last night!”

The skit in question happened during Saturday Night Live over the weekend, with the long-running comedy show adding to its repertoire of dated Irish jokes.

It wasn’t all disappointment and bad jokes for the Irish this year. The brilliant Irish Goodbye won the Best Short Film award on the night, with one of the most wholesome moments of the night happening during their acceptance speech.
