The Oscar nominee has revealed he’ll be taking his 13-year-old son Henry to the ceremony as his plus one.

Colin Farrell, who is nominated for his first-ever Academy Award for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin, spoke to IndieWire about his excitement for the upcoming ceremony, saying he’s “giddy” to be nominated.

“I enter that space as a fan. Yes, I entered it as a nominee, and I’m giddy as a nominee, but I’m giddy as a nominee because I’m a fan, and because I’ve watched [other] nominees’ work since I was a child.”

For the night itself, Farrell will be bringing a very special guest as his date for the evening, his youngest son Henry.

“My youngest fellow will be my plus one. So the two of us are wearing the same tuxedos and we’re looking forward to it.”

Henry is Farrell’s second son, who he shares with Alicja Bachleda-Curuś, his co-star in the 2009 film Ondine. In a Vanity Fair interview, Farrell gave a little more insight into the father and son matching tuxedos, saying they’ll be velvet. We’re sure they’ll be the talk of the red carpet.

Irish Oscars takeover

Farrell is amongst a healthy number of Irish actors represented at the Oscars this year. His Banshees co-stars are all up for major awards on the night including Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan for Best Supporting Actor, Kerry Condon for Best Supporting Actress, and Martin McDonagh for Best Director.

The movie itself is also nominated for multiple awards including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Farrell also finds himself up against Aftersun star Paul Mescal for Best Actor.

“We don’t see each other that much, we live in different countries, so to be around them as much as I have has been fucking magic. It’s been such a balm for the soul. And then also, honest to God, to be at the forefront of celebrating the work of others has been really, really enjoyable. The sense of community has been extraordinary.”

Farrell has had an impressive awards season so far, winning a Golden Globe, while also being nominated at the SAG awards and the BAFTAS. He lost out to Elvis star Austin Butler for the BAFTA gong, and to The Whale’s Brendan Fraser who won outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role at the SAG Awards.

“At times I still pinch myself that I get to do what I do for a living. And I know it’s not curing cancer and I know it’s not splitting the atom, but films have played a really important part of my life as a boy, as a young man. They do today as a man. They play an important part of my life as a father. Myself, my two kids, films are a real cornerstone of our relationships.”

The 95th Academy Awards ceremony takes place on Sunday, March 13.
