Narrow escape for students after school bus veers into ditch in Cork

The incident happened in West Cork.

A group of students had a narrow escape when the bus they were traveling on veered into a ditch.

30 students were on board when the incident happened.

The bus was driving between Drimoleague and Skibbereen in West Cork.

The bus veered into a ditch at around 4 pm on Thursday, May 5th.

An eye-witness said the students are blessed the bus didn’t topple over completely.

None of the students were injured in the accident.

Passengers were able to escape from the Bus Eireann bus through the emergency door.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after the accident but said nobody was harmed.

Gardaí in Cork confirmed no injuries were reported when they attended the scene.

However, Bus Eireann has launched an investigation into the incident.

Speaking to Cork Beo, a local taxi driver, who witnessed the accident, said the students are “very lucky”.

He told the publication that the bus wasn’t breaking the speed limit.

“It didn’t seem to be going very fast but then it kind of tipped over. There’s a little bit of a drop in that stretch.”

“Thankfully they all managed to get out the emergency door.”

He continued, “It could’ve been very serious if the bus had gone fully on its side.”
