Childminding Ireland Staff Threaten Strike Action

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Staff at Childminding Ireland, the national organisation promoting quality family home-based childcare, have threatened to begin indefinite strike action.

According to a report in the Irish Examiner, five of the six staff members have voted in favour of taking industrial action from Tuesday, June 7 until management withdraw compulsory redundancy notices and discuss their proposed restructuring plans with workers.

Impact trade union claims the proposed redundancies are unfounded as the organisation is not in any financial difficulty. The union believes Childminding Ireland is attempting to force staff from their jobs illegally with the intention of replacing them with new employees.

Founded in 1983 by a small group of childminders, Childminding Ireland is a membership organisation and a Registered Charity that represents child minders at national level and lobbies for appropriate recognition and inclusion in proposed government policies and schemes.
